A wooden floor gives your interior extra warmth and atmosphere. Underfloor heating makes your home even more comfortable. But can you put a wooden floor on top of underfloor heating?
The answer is a resounding “Yes”. A wooden floor and underfloor heating are a great combination. The floor stays in excellent condition and heating efficiency is good, as long as you take a few things into account.
Choose an engineered floor (multilayered)
Solid parquet shrinks and expands much more due to heat and humidity and is therefore not suitable.
The maximum allowed thickness of oak flooring is 15 mm
Up to 15 mm, you have good heat conduction and excellent efficiency.
Full adhesion of the floor is an absolute must
With a floating floor, you get an air layer that acts as an insulator, resulting in low efficiency. Moreover, the planks will shrink and expand too much, which can be detrimental to your floor.
Underfloor heating must be installed according to best practices
The heating and cooling protocol must always be strictly followed. Water-based systems are best because they warm up less abruptly. Furthermore, the heat must be evenly distributed across the floor.
Know that a wooden floor expands and contracts
This may cause small gaps between the planks. This is completely normal.
The relative humidity in the room is crucial for a healthy parquet and must be between 40 and 55%. This is to minimize the chance of distortion, crack formation or open slits. Taking this into account, gap formation is generally distributed regularly and must be tolerated.
The subject of underfloor heating can be discussed extensively. These are just basic instructions. The installation of underfloor heating is always the responsibility of the installer. Always respect local regulations.
